Greetings, Loyal Reader!
You know those blurbs you find on books that are intended to make you think that this book is super-awesome because Famous Author X says so? Like —“This book scared me.” — Stephen King or “A real page turner.” — John Grisham.
I probably won’t have many of those on the new edition of Jason Cosmo: Hero Wanted. They seem silly to me. I rarely buy a book because of such blurbs. Especially since I know that such blurbs are often written as favors to Famous Author X’s editor, agent, wife’s cousin, etc. Now I’m not saying that if Sir Terry Pratchett were to spontaneously and on his own initiative, with no prompting whatsoever from me, send me a letter stating that he has been waiting patiently for years for Jason Cosmo to return to print and volunteer a blurb like “This book is hilarious.” — Terry Pratchett that I wouldn’t make that the entire front cover of the book. I’m not an idiot.
But that isn’t going to happen.
In any event, I am much more influenced in my choice of books by the opinions of other readers, not other authors. Amazon.com was one of the first booksellers to grasp the power of reader reviews. I would daresay that the reader review feature had much to do with Amazon’s rise. The books of the Jason Cosmo series have received some good review there, as well as a few bad reviews, and some in between. It is the good opinion of the book-reading (and book-buying) public that matters, not that of other writers (though also nice to have).
So, how would you like to write a blurb for Hero Wanted?
I’m thinking that I would like to use reader blurbs and reviews for the upcoming Trove Books release of Hero Wanted.
So send yours in! You can post it here in the comments, or write to me at Dan @ JasonCosmo.com
What? The book isn’t out yet, so how can you blurb it? Excellent question! You have three options:
1. Write your blurb the way famous authors do! Don’t actually read the book.
2. Take a shortcut! If you read the original Jason Cosmo, then you’ve got the gist of Hero Wanted, which is basically the expanded director’s cut special edition DVD version of Jason Cosmo. So blurb that.
3. Be conscientious! You can wait until I finish the editing process and send out review copies of Hero Wanted, sometime in the coming weeks.
How long should your blurb be? No more than two or three sentences. Twenty-five words or less is good. Ten words or less is better. Be clever! Be funny! But be honest … you are recommending the book to future Loyal Readers, so don’t blurb unless you can do so in good conscience. I can’t promise your blurb will end up on the cover of the book — especially if Sir Terry comes through — but who knows? ((As a bit of legalese, by submitting a blurb you are granting permission for me, Dan McGirt, and my publisher, Trove Books LLC, to quote your blurb in whole or in part for purposes of promoting the book Hero Wanted. Just so you know.))
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best regards,
Dan McGirt
